In 2011, five districts in Karamoja have not been able to send students to the merit based government sponsored university education scheme. This clearly means that without affirmative action, such as the district quota system in which each district in the country is given a slot to fill up, the Karimojong children may never attain university education except children of a few who can afford private education. How do we reverse this trend?

For a very long time, the people of Karamoja have depended on food handouts from World Food Program and related organizations., while this is good for the short run, the consistent promotion of food aid to Karamoja seems to give no durable and sustainable solution to the people.

Do you think in the absence of food hand outs the people in Karamoja could produce their own food? What alternative mechanisms, can government, civil society and the people of Karamoja adopt to ensure their own food production, or at least cut the dependency on aid?

This month, our discussion will focus on what should be done to build a sustainable disarmament strategy in Karamoja. The discussions should elucidate why the last gun has not been got out of Karamoja. We recognize that, most of the Karimojong cattle rustlers have made their lives entirely dependent on cattle rustling. Whereas cattle rustling is a manifestation of the economic survival strategy, it is not acceptable to engage in acts that violate and deprive other people their property and lives. It is a reflection of how lawlessness has swallowed up the moral and legal ethical conduct. Your talking points should have mention of what alternative livelihood strategies should be adopted by the cattle rustlers. What rehabilitation services (mental and physical) should be designed to disarm not only the gun at hand, but most importantly the gun in the the mind.Additionally, we should be able to analyze whether those people that gave out their guns in the earlier previous disarmament exercise have realized how illegal arms have devastated their lives or whether they just felt they had to return the guns as a government requirement and policy. We definitely want to see our people develop the conviction that disarmament is not just a government exercise but as roadmap towards development in the region. If there is some level of dissatisfaction resulting from handing off the gun, suggest what should be done to make them feel that they disarmament is the right thing.

Welcome to KPDDN’s discussion page on peace building!

We are excited to see you here, and look forward to your view point. In this forum, there are no right or wrong viewpoints, but there are strong and weak view points that can eventually lead to strong and sustainable solutions or weak and non lasting solutions. Many institutions and individuals in working in Karamoja, both government and non governmental do not like criticisms, but this forum provides you the opportunity to give positive and constructive criticisms where necessary because we are seeking lasting solutions. Therefore, do not be afraid to express your opinion

This month, our discussion in this area will focus on sustainable peacebulding within Karamoja. We know that peace building is important is is a major threat to human security in the region. A lot of dialogues and peace talks have happened among almost all the ethnic groups in Karamoja, but nothing fruitful is there to show. Our discussion should include but not limited to:

Why, even within Karamoja fighting has never stopped.

Why past attempts for peace and dialogue keep collapsing

How best the Karimojong can craft their own peace

How Government can support peace initiatives

How NGO’s and other civil society can support peace building in Karamoja
